In 1845, during the time when Mexico controlled the area, the land was part of the Rancho El Scorpion land grant. In 1871, the land was acquired by Miguel Leonis, who combined them with other area land holdings. Leonis used his acquired lands to raise herds of sheep and cattle. In 1967, the Bell Canyon area was purchased by the Spruce Land Corporation in partnership with Boise Cascade with the intention of developing a gated community. In 1968, the Bell Canyon Equestrian Center was designed and built by Cliff May and opened to the public that same year. In 1969, the subdivision of Woodland Hills Country Estates opened, all 800 or so homes sold in a matter of days.
