Oxnard is the largest community, by population, in Ventura County, California and it is the 19th largest, by population, in the state. It is the largest of the principal cities in the Oxnard-Thousand Oaks-Ventura Metropolitan Area. Oxnard is located along Southern California’s beautiful coastline and it is part of the Greater Los Angeles Metropolitan Area. The city hasp around 40 neighborhoods and is among the wealthiest areas of the United States. However, compared to other places in the state of California, wages aren’t all that high comparatively. Before the arrival of Europeans, the Oxnard area was inhabited by the native Chumash tribes. When the Spanish arrived in 1542, they claimed the area for Spain. During the mission era, which began in the later part of the 1700s, the area was served by the Mission of San Buenaventura. In 1850, California became a U.S. state and ranches/rancheros became the main industry of the area. Henry T. Oxnard is considered one of the founders of the community and the city is named after him. Henry, along with his brothers established a successful sugar beat factory which helped spur the growth of the budding community and in 1903 the community was incorporated.
The city is served by four school districts, it has 54 public schools and a student body of more than 53,000 students. The city is home to a wonderful recreational harbor, Channel Islands Harbor and several beaches, such as Silver Strand Beach, Mandalay Beach, Oxnard Beach and others.
