Thousand Oaks is the 2nd largest city in Ventura County, California. It is located in the northwestern part of the Greater Los Angeles Area. Thousand Oaks is one of the principal cities of the Oxnard-Thousand Oaks-Ventura Metropolitan Area. It has approximately 28 neighborhoods and is the 43rd largest community in the state. It is ranked the fourth safest community among cities with a population over 100,000 in the U.S. It has a wonderful council/manager style of city government and a beautiful hot summer Mediterranean climate. Thousand Oaks is a Tree City U.S.A. community and is one of the United States greenest cities. The city spans 55.33 square miles of nearly all land area. In 2018, the population estimate was 127,690 and the population density was about 2,336 people per square mile. Over 8% of the workforce works from home primarily via telecommuting, home based businesses and freelance endeavors. The native Chumash people inhabited the area before the arrival of Europeans. There were a few Chumash villages and encampments throughout the area. Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo landed at what is now Point Mugu in 1542 and claimed the land for Spain. The land passed from Spain to Mexico to the U.S. and back and forth over the course of several tumultuous years which finally calmed when California gained official statehood. Growth was slow but steady and in 1964 the community was officially incorporated. Today, growth continues in the city as they encourage the development of mixed-use communities that feature both retail and residential spaces. Public education is provided by the Conejo Valley Unified School District. The district has 27 schools and a student body of more than 19,000 students.
